Tupperware Talks- Lunchtime Panel. Out of the Box: fresh academic and artistic approaches to Arts + Health collaborations

Gain an insight into three very different fusions of arts, health and academia, with our acclaimed and inspiring panel of specialists, in conversation with Alex Coulter, Director of Arts + Health South West. Giving insights into their diverse area of work are:

Dr Louise Benson James, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Ghent University – Intracorporeal Narratives: Reading Internal Biology in Women’s Literature, 1880s-1930s.

Dr Benson James’ research examines British and American women’s fiction of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for its depictions of anatomy. Comparing fictional texts to medical writing and advertising of the same era, she tracks the medical understanding of the internal body, communication in the public realm, and exploration in literature.

Dr Barny Hole is a kidney doctor studying for a PhD that considers how older people with kidney problems choose between dialysis and comprehensive conservative care.

Together they have collaborated with playwright Elspeth Penny on ‘Out Like Fudge’ based on verbatim interviews with kidney patients. Also up for discussion is the participatory project ‘Letter to my Kidney’.

Angie Bual is Director of Trigger and creator of ‘With You’, a creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This free digital service supports isolated patients and care home residents by bringing voice messages from their friends and family together on one playable audio track. Trigger are working with Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, Whittington Health NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to create this resource.
