Sophie Shepherd

As Community Producer at Culture Weston, I am passionate about creating accessible opportunities for local people whether that’s to take part in a workshop or develop their career as an artist! Weston is my hometown and I want to enable local people to realise their potential and achieve their aspirations given that many of the current opportunities were not available whilst I was growing up here.

At 18, I moved away from Weston to study theatre and poetry at university but always knew I wanted to come back and help grow an artistic community here. I also work as a youth support worker in Southward for the Boombox Youth project and have enjoyed using my connections to help foster opportunities for local young people from reimagining the local park as part of the Future Radicals project to lantern-making for GLOW 2022.

As well as producing, poetry is a mega huge passion of mine! Over the last few months I have hosted poetry slams called Rhyme Against the Tide in the wonderful space at Loves Café. It has been lovely to watch many poets – some performing for the first time ever – step out of their comfort zone and showcase their talents.

Being a part of the Culture Weston team has allowed me to expand my knowledge beyond theatre and performance. I have learnt that growing creativity here can help improve people’s wellbeing and regenerate our spaces. I am so grateful to be a part of such a supportive, people-powered organisation!
